The ONCE Typhlology Museum, the only one where you can touch the works on display, is a ‘little Fitur’ in which you can get to know Spain and the world with your hands, through the models of national and international monuments. It was inaugurated on December 14, 1992.
It is situated in Tetuán district (Madrid).
The exhibited works from Spain are classified by autonomous communities: the Royal Palace, the Monasterio de El Escorial or Plaza de Cibeles belong to the community of Madrid; the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and Pontevedra (Galicia); the Courtyard of the Lions of the Alhambra in Granada and the Mihrab of the Mosque of Córdoba (Andalusia).
They will also be able to get to know by touch important monuments of Castilla y León, such as the Cathedral of Burgos, San Martín de Frómista (Palencia) or the city of Ávila, with its most important wall, cathedral, palaces and churches.
Cantabria is also in the Museum, with a model of the Altamira cave paintings; and Aragón, with the monumental Basilica del Pilar in Zaragoza (the, for now, last model to be part of the collection).
The Sagrada Familia, representing Catalonia and Barcelona, can also be seen and touched in this museum; in addition to the model of the city of Toledo (Castilla-La Mancha), with the canvas of the wall, the Puerta Nueva de Bisagra and the Puerta Antigua de Bisagra. Extremadura is represented by the model of the Monastery of Yuste, which presents the set of buildings of the monastery, as well as the garden environment that surrounds it, pond, orchard and fruit trees.
Those who visit the ONCE Typhlological Museum will have the world in their hands, with the model of the Taj Mahal, made of white marble extracted from the Macrana mines; the Kremlin in Moscow; the Colosseum in Rome; the Eiffel Tower in Paris; London Tower Bridge; and, across the ocean, the Pyramid of Chichén-Itzá (Mexico) and the Puerta del Sol of Tiahuanaco (Bolivia) or the very famous Statue of Liberty.
The Tiflológico also has rooms in which works by blind or visually impaired artists are exhibited, demonstrating that lacking the sense of sight is not an obstacle to being able to sculpt, paint or photograph and approach art in a practical way.
