OPERA

Thursday, 7th March 20.15h at the Cinemes Illa Carlemany, Escaldes-Engordany. Originally sung in La Scala, Milan. Josep Carreras in Andrea Chénier. Andrea Chénier is a verismo opera in four acts by Umberto Giordano. The story is based loosely on the life of the French poet André Chénier, who was executed during the French Revolution. The character Carlo Gérard is partly based on Jean-Lambert Tallien, a leading figure in the Revolution.

It remains popular with audiences, though less frequently performed than in the first half of the 20th century. One reason for its survival in the repertoire is the lyrical-dramatic music provided by Giordano for the tenor lead, which gives a talented singer opportunities to demonstrate his histrionic skill and flaunt his voice. This was Carreras’ chance to flaunt his.

At the hands of the anthropologist and traveller, Francesc Bailón, we will meet one of the most fascinating and yet little known countries on the planet. Although Colombia is still not a major tourist destination, especially due to the presence of guerrillas and drug trafficking, it is a country with great contrasts of colour, a wide variety of landscapes and ethnic groups that coexist with the remains of ancient pre-Columbian civilizations and cities, colonialists who seem stalled in time. We will enter into the jungle of Tayrona.

We will bathe from the Caribbean beaches. We will climb the Andes mountain range and visit pre-Hispanic archaeological sites that are a World Heritage Site for Unesco, such as San Agustín and Tierradentro. We will live with the Kogui and Misak tribes and we will travel through the cobbled streets of Villa de Leyva and Barichara, considered two of the most beautiful cities in the whole of America. Francesc Bailón Trueba holds a degree in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Barcelona. Specialized in Inuit culture, since 1997 he has been devoting himself to the study and research of this town. In addition, he is a contributor to National Geographic History.
