Plaza de Alonso Martínez (Madrid)

Alonso Martínez Square (formerly known as Santa Bárbara roundabout) is a wide crossroads spot in the Chamberí district and Centro district of Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain.

The streets of Génova, Almagro, Santa Engracia, Sagasta and, on the south side, the Plaza de Santa Bárbara meet there. Its last name honours the jurist and politician Manuel Alonso Martínez.

Previously called “Glorieta de Santa Bárbara” because the Santa Bárbara Gate was located there in the central space of this square until the mid-19th century. Between Almagro and Santa Engracia streets there was the Circo Colón, designed by Emilio Muñoz in 1889.

From January 12, 1891 it took the name of Manuel Alonso Martínez in gratitude for his efforts for the development of the Canal de Isabel II. On January 5, 1902 and in the presence of Alfonso XIII, a statue of Quevedo sculpted by Agustín Querol Subirats was installed, which would later be moved to the Quevedo roundabout.

In 1944 the first platforms of the Alonso Martínez station of the Madrid Metro were inaugurated.
