The San Antón Market is a food market located in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain.
The first building was designed in 1945 under the project of the architect Carlos de la Torre y Costa. The evolution of the neighborhood means that in the nineties the changes in the habits of the neighborhood’s consumers, decreasing demand, and the use of the market declines. In the first decade of the 21st century, renovation takes place, for which the old building is demolished in 2007, and a new one with new market and restaurant services is built five years later.
History
The area had an open-air market in the 19th century: a market with wooden boxes called “San Antón”. Its name is due to the fact that it is next to the parish of San Antón (attached to the Escuelas Pías). During the Civil War in the midst of the defense of Madrid, the ‘Mercado’ was in operation.
The new market hall was opened in May 2011 in a renovated building. This renovation includes new services such as restaurants, bars with terraces and exhibition halls.
