Maravillas market (Madrid)

Maravillas market (Mercado Municipal de Maravillas) is a food market in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, located on Calle Bravo Murillo (no. 122).

In 1942, the market was opened, designed by the architect Pedro Muguruza Otaño in 1933, and intended to be one of the largest in the city in the 1950s. It was built on the land left by the Colegio de Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas after the fire that it suffered in 1931 in the Cuatro Caminos neighborhood. The market, completed in the post-war period, has a surface area of 8,700 square meters and more than 250 stalls. It is in a rationalist style. At the beginning of the 21st century, it is one of the largest markets in the Tetuán district.

History

At the end of the 19th century, the area of the current Bravo Murillo was a neighborhood of the industrial expansion. In the area there was a glossy paper factory called Las Maravillas. The factory site was acquired by the religious congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, dedicated to education. The school began its activity in 1892 and inherited the name of the factory: Colegio de Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas.

In 1933, the mayor of Madrid, Pedro Rico López, directly commissioned the Madrid architect Pedro Muguruza (designer of the Palacio de la Prensa) to carry out the project to build a municipal market on the site near the Glorieta de Cuatro Caminos. This completed the open-air market that had been held for years. The first Madrid Metro transported people from the city centre to the area. The project suffered several delays due to the socio-political situation in the country. Finally, the project was interrupted by the war in the defence of Madrid.
