Plaza de Cibeles is located in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, at the intersection of Calle de Alcalá (which crosses it from west to east) with Paseo de Recoletos (to the north) and Paseo del Prado (to the south). This place, one of the most symbolic in the capital, divides the districts of the Centro, Retiro and Salamanca.
In the centre of the complex is the famous Cibeles fountain, sculpted in 1782, based on a design by Buenaventura Rodríguez Tizón. Each of the four corners of the square is presided over by emblematic buildings, built between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
The Buenavista Palace, occupied by the Army Headquarters and dating from 1777, is the oldest of them all. It is located in the north-west corner, facing the Linares Palace, now Casa de América, which stands on the north-east corner.
The Palacio de Cibeles, the seat of Madrid City Hall since 2007, extends to the south-east corner and the Bank of Spain to the south-west.
Over the years, the Palacio de Cibeles and the fountain have become the city’s symbolic monument.
