Parque Madrid Río

Madrid Río is an urban park in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, built along an urban stretch of the Manzanares River after the M-30 ring road was buried in this area.

It is the result of a project led by the architectural studios Burgos/Garrido, Porras/La Casta, Rubio/Álvarez-Sala and West 8.1 who won the international ideas competition organized by Madrid City Council in 2005 to redevelop the area.

The project began with the idea of recovering the banks of the Manzanares River for the use and enjoyment of citizens, and was a central idea in the remodeling of the M-30, led by engineer Manuel Melis Maynar.

The section now known as Madrid Río is the stretch of the river that was boxed in by the M-30 expressway, a road that isolated the river between the two directions of the motorway as well as acting as a barrier and fracture between the two sides of the city, the Arganzuela district on the left side, and the Latina, Carabanchel and Usera districts on the right side.

The connection of the M-30 with the A-5 motorway, the Extremadura road, separated the city in an impassable way from the Casa de Campo, the largest park in Madrid.

The project involved burying the M-30 in this area as well as that section of the A-5 that ran parallel to the Casa de Campo.

Among the most symbolic examples of the park are Matadero Madrid, the Arganzuela Footbridge, and Toledo bridge (1732).
