Mayakovsky Theater

The Moscow Academic Vladimir Mayakovsky Theater (in 1922-1941 – the Theater of the Revolution, in 1941-1954 – the Moscow Drama Theater) is one of the oldest drama theaters in Moscow. Founded in 1922, located on Bolshaya Nikitskaya street. The directors were Vsevolod Meyerhold, Nikolai Gorchakov and Andrei Goncharov at different times. The basis of the repertoire is made up of performances staged based on works of Russian classical literature.

The theater at Nikitsky (that’s how it was known for a while) was built in 1886 by Konstantin Tersky specifically as a venue for famous foreign artists visiting Moscow. Among those who performed there in the late 19th century were Sarah Bernhardt, Eleonora Duse, Ernst von Possart, Jean Mounet-Sully, Coquelin Sr. and Coquelin Jr. At the turn of the 20th century, the theater was known as Internationale.
