Casa de Allende (Madrid)

The Casa de Allende is a building in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, designed by the architect Leonardo Rucabado Gómez for its owner, Tomás Allende Alonso, from whom it takes its name. The building, whose construction took place between 1916 and 1920, is located on Carrera de San Jerónimo, on the corner of Plaza de Canalejas, in the Centro district. For a long time it was also known as the Crédit Lyonnais building, because this financial institution was located on its ground floor. On Plaza de Canalejas it borders the Meneses Building, in an eclectic style.

The architect adopted forms of traditional Spanish architecture, following the regionalist trend of the 19th century. The building has a large tower on the corner as a suggestive finishing touch. It is an absolutely singular and unique building in Madrid architecture, where a magnificent wooden viewing point stands out over the Carrera de San Jerónimo, in the style of Cantabrian architecture. It also has elaborate ironwork on balconies and stairs, where there are built-in stained glass windows. The exuberant sculptural ornamentation enhances the majesty of the building.

It is the typical representative building of the architecture that emerged after the crisis of 1898, and which attempted to adapt regional styles to the new needs of modern life.

The ceramic finishing of the building is of great beauty and originality, the work of the ceramist Daniel Zuloaga y Boneta.
