Calle de Carretas (Madrid)

Carretas Street is one of the streets of Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain that begins at the Puerta del Sol. Its name is due to the war of the Communities of Castile, when to defend the city some carts were placed there as a parapet for its better defense.

History

In 1834, the streets of Carretas and Montera were the first to be paved and cobbled with a sidewalk. Later, at the end of the 19th century, the street became famous for the number of shops specializing in orthopedic appliances.

It was also a street of bookstores (such as Escamilla). At one time it was one of the typical routes of the Corpus Christi procession in Madrid. At the end of the street there was a very popular exchange house, called the Lonja del Almidón.

On 16 February 2018, work began on the remodelling of the street to convert it into a pedestrian street and thus give continuity to the north-south pedestrian commercial axis formed by Fuencarral and Montera streets. The pedestrianisation works on the street, 224 metres long, were completed on 21 November of the same year.
