Bordadores Street, formerly called San Ginés Street, is a public street in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, located in the Sol neighborhood, Centro district, and which connects Calle Mayor with Arenal Street.
History
It runs from Calle Mayor to Calle del Arenal. In the Texeira map of 1656 it appeared with the name of “San Ginés”, to be called Bordadores in the Antonio Espinosa de los Monteros map. It is described in the Historical and etymological origin of the streets of Madrid by Antonio de Capmany.
In 1595, pieces of Francisco González’s houses were bought to widen the street and in 1889 there were records of constructions since 1781. The silk embroiderers had their shops on the street. Under one of the chapels of the San Ginés church, there was an oratory with entrances to Calle de Bordadores, where spiritual exercises were practiced on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays of each week. In 1946, the film El crimen de la calle de Bordadores, by Edgar Neville, was released, based on a real event happened on Fuencarral Street.
