Pera Museum (PeraMüzesi) is a private museum located in the Tepebaşı district of Istanbul. It was founded in 2005 by the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation to provide qualified and large-scale culture and arts services.

It operates in a building that was designed as a contemporary and well-equipped museum by preserving the façade of the historical Bristol Hotel in Tepebaşı within the framework of the two-year project between 2003-2005 prepared by the restoration architect Sinan Genim.

Pera Museum features Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation’s “Orientalist Painting,” “Anatolian Weights and Measures,” and “Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics” collections and exhibitions, publishing products, oral events, educational activities, and scientific studies. It shares these exhibitions with the public through the media and aims to pass it on to future generations.

The Anatolian Weights and Measures Collection exhibition, located in a large part of the first floor of the museum, includes weights and measures used in these lands from ancient times to the beginning of the 20th Century, as well as outstanding examples of weighing and measuring devices produced in various materials and techniques. The Anatolian Weights and Measures Collection, exhibited in sections in long-term exhibitions consisting of approximately 10,000 works, is a collection that appeals especially to history and archeology enthusiasts.

The Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics Collection, which is located in the other part of the same floor, constitutes an important part of the Ottoman craft and art mosaic in a period extending from the mid-18th Century to the beginning of the 20th Century.

Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation’s Orientalist Painting Collection, consisting of more than 300 paintings, is a comprehensive collection of works by European “orientalist” painters and Ottoman artists inspired by the Ottoman world and geography. This collection, which offers a wide visual panorama from the period of the empire from the 17th Century to the beginning of the 20th Century, also includes the painting entitled “The Turtle Trainer” by the famous painter Osman Hamdi Bey.
