Longoria Palace (Madrid)

The palace of Don Javier González-Longoria, better known as the Longoria Palace, is a 20th-century Spanish modernist palace built in the Centro district of Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, at the confluence of Fernando VI and Pelayo streets. It is currently the headquarters of the SGAE (General Society of Authors and Editors).

It is the work of the architect José Grases Riera who built this palace from 1902 to 1904 with absolute freedom of design, making it the most important example of the modernist movement in Madrid.

It was built by order of the financier Javier González Longoria. In addition to its exterior facades, among its most unique elements is the imperial staircase with a circular perimeter, crowned by a dome, whose stained glass window is the work of the Casa Maumejean.

The staircase is strongly influenced by French and Belgian Art Nouveau, with its plant elements, flowers and the characteristic “whiplash” of modernism that emerged from the works of Víctor Horta in Brussels.
