Meritxell Day, which is celebrated annually on September 8, is one of the most important festivals in Andorra. This commemoration, dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Meritxell (patron saint of the Principality), integrates religiosity, tradition and popular culture in a unique mountainous environment. Declared a national holiday, the day offers the opportunity to learn about the country’s identity and live an authentic experience in the heart of the Pyrenees.
The main event takes place at the Sanctuary of Meritxell (Canillo), where solemn masses and meetings of pilgrims from all parishes were held. The culminating moment was the solemn concelebrated Mass, presided over by the bishop of Urgell and Co-Prince of Andorra, Josep-Lluís Serrano Pentinat, and accompanied by the traditional Song of Joys.
