Villaverde (17th District of Madrid) is one of the 21 districts that make up Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain.
It is located in the southern end of the city of Madrid. Previously, it was an independent municipality, the last to be absorbed by Madrid, on July 31, 1954.
The district of Villaverde is bordered to the west by the municipality of Leganés, to the south by that of Getafe, to the east by the district of Villa de Vallecas across the boundary of the Manzanares River, and to the north by the district of Usera, separating it from this through the Madrid ring road M-40.
Its average altitude ranges from 603 m in Los Ángeles to 596 m in the San Andrés neighborhood. The area of the district is 2028.65 ha.
However, before the annexation by Madrid, the municipality of Villaverde included, in addition to the current district, most of the current district of Usera and a small part of Vallecas.
The district is administratively divided into five barrios: Butarque, Los Ángeles, Los Rosales, San Cristóbal de los Ángeles, Villaverde Alto.
Transport
Currently, Villaverde has 5 conventional railway stations, serving the district with 3 Madrid commuter lines and one medium-distance line:
- Puente Alcocer Station: This station has the peculiarity of being the only underground conventional railway station in the district. It is located on Calle Alcocer, serving not only the nearby residential homes but also the PSA factory. Commuter trains on Line C-5 stop at the station.
- San Cristóbal de los Ángeles Station: It serves the neighbourhood of the same name and, to a lesser extent, Butarque. Both Line C-3 and C-3a trains stop at the station.
- San Cristóbal Industrial Station: It serves Marconi and the La Resina Industrial Estate. Both Line C-3 and C-3a trains stop at the station.
- Villaverde Alto Station: Serves Villaverde Alto and the La Resina Industrial Estate. Trains on both the C-4 and C-5 lines stop at the station. Line 3 of the Madrid Metro also stops there.
- Villaverde Bajo Station: Serves Los Rosales, Butarque and, to a lesser extent, Perales del Río, thanks to the nearby bus stop (CRTM line 411) that connects Madrid with this town.
The metro has always been a historical demand in Villaverde: it was not until 2007 when line 3 of the Madrid Metro reached the district. The route of the line through the district includes the stations of Ciudad de los Ángeles (in the Los Ángeles neighbourhood), Villaverde Bajo-Cruce (in the Cruce de Villaverde), San Cristóbal (in the San Cristóbal de los Ángeles neighbourhood) and Villaverde Alto (in the San Andrés neighbourhood).
Until the arrival of the metro, they were the backbone of transport in Villaverde.
In the district of Villaverde, the urban lines are in all cases operated by the EMT of Madrid.
In addition to these, there are additional intercity services which also stop or have their terminal in the district of Villaverde, which connect it with other towns outside Madrid.
