The grand-bi is a type of bicycle that has a very large diameter front wheel and a much smaller rear wheel. The advantage of the large front wheel is to increase the distance traveled for one turn of the pedal. The grand-bi appeared in the early 1870s and enjoyed great popularity among athletes during the 1870s and 1880s, but was relatively little used by amateurs and the public because of its dangerousness. It was supplanted from 1890 by the safety bicycle, ancestor of the modern bicycle.
