Parque Cuarto Depósito (Madrid)

Opened at the end of 2004, the Cuarto Depósito park is located at the northern end of La Costa Fleming, very close to Plaza de Castilla in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain.

It is built on the roof of the Cuarto Depósito water storage of the Canal de Isabel II, currently in use. Executed based on a project drawn up in 1925, it resumes the tradition of the old Roman and Islamic cisterns, based on brick arches and pillars.

In the mid-twentieth century, the city began to grow towards the north, which made it necessary to build a new elevated reservoir. This also proved insufficient, so a new pumping station was installed and a small part of the primitive infrastructure has remained unused since then.

The surface area of the park is around 45,000 square metres. Of these, the central 17,256 are occupied by a pond surrounded by meadow that divides the area into four different areas, separated by high pergolas.

It also has a water labyrinth, a walkway shaded by enormous bougainvilleas, a spectacular rose garden, a children’s area with swings and slides and a large garden in which the Arte Canal Exhibition Centre is located. It is a rarely visited park, a haven of peace in the middle of traffic and asphalt.
