Côte d’Argent (Silver Coast)

The Silver Coast (Côte d’Argent) is a choronym that refers to a section of the Neo-Aquitaine coastline in southwest France, stretching along the Landes de Gascogne, from the Gironde estuary (south of the Côte de Beauté) to the Adour estuary (gateway to the Basque coast).

It is a straight, sandy coastline bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, which breaks in powerful waves, attracting surfers. It is bordered by high dunes (the highest in Europe), anchored by a maritime pine forest (Landes forest) and home to numerous lakes and ponds. The sand brought in by the sea amounts to 15 to 18 cubic meters per meter of coastline per year.
