Ángel square, and formerly the Plazuela del Ángel, is an asymmetrical urban space at the top of the Musas (or Letras) neighbourhood in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain; it is formed by the confluence of the streets of San Sebastián, Cruz, Espoz y Mina, Huertas, and the corners of the Plaza de Santa Ana to the east and the Plaza de Benavente to the west.
History
Apparently, the old Plazuela del Ángel took its name from the Guardian Angel who decorated the façade of one of its buildings.
In the second half of the 16th century, the brotherhoods of La Pasión and La Soledad acquired a large corral in 1579, located at the mouth of Calle de la Cruz with the Plazuela del Ángel. The Corral de Comedias de La Cruz, which would later become the Teatro de la Cruz, was inaugurated on 16 September 1584, almost at the same time as the new Corral del Príncipe.
