Teatro Calderón (Madrid)

The Teatro Calderón (Teatro Caser Calderón for sponsorship reasons) is a theatre in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, located at 18 Calle de Atocha (just opposite Plaza de Jacinto Benavente).

History

On June 18, 1917, the Teatro Odeón, now known as the Calderón, was inaugurated. It is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful buildings in the centre of Madrid, both for its exterior architecture and for its interior decoration. It was designed by the architect Eduardo Sánchez Eznarriaga.

The stained glass windows in the lobby are by Maumejean and the paintings in the hall by Demetrio Monteserín. It has a capacity for more than a thousand spectators. It occupies part of the site of the former Convent of the Calzados Trinitarians. A year after its inauguration, it passed into the hands of the Centro de Hijos de Madrid, and began to be known as the Teatro del Centro. It changed ownership and name again in 1927. Being property of the Duke of Infantado it became known as the Teatro Calderón.
