The convent of Don Juan de Alarcón is located at 15 Valverde Street, on the corner of Puebla Street, in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain.
The Convent of Don Juan de Alarcón is the popular name given to the convent of Our Lady of the Conception, of the order of the Discalced Mercedarians. Founded in 1609 by the priest Juan Pacheco de Alarcón, from whom it takes its name, who was executor of María de Miranda, widow of Juan Arista de Zúñiga, lord of Montalvo.
It is known that the church was completed in 1656 and that the complex was renovated in 1671 by the architect Gaspar de la Peña.
The church is a good example of 17th century Madrid Baroque architecture. The main façade, which faces Calle de la Puebla, follows the model created by the architect Alberto de la Madre de Dios in Madrid Royal Monastery of the Encarnación, although simplifying the composition and replacing the stone with the cheaper brick. Towards Calle de Valverde there is a simple façade decorated with an image of the convent’s patron saint and heraldic motifs.
