Iglesia de la Paloma (Madrid)

The Church of La Paloma is the popular name given to the church of the parish of San Pedro el Real, a Catholic temple located in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, on Calle de la Paloma. It is a part of the religious celebrations of the Verbena de la Paloma.

Its construction began at the end of the 19th century and it houses a painting of Our Lady of Solitude, known as the Virgin of La Paloma. It is one of the most devoted images among Catholics in Madrid.

Description

The current church stands on the site of the original chapel built at the end of the 18th century. This was demolished in 1896 and replaced by a larger building, built in neo-Mudejar style, with some neo-Gothic elements. It was inaugurated on March 23, 1912.

It is the work of the architect Lorenzo Álvarez Capra, who designed a Latin cross plan, with two side naves and a central nave, presided over by the main altar (where the painting of the Virgen de la Paloma is located).

Its main façade is made up of a central body with a portico, on the sides of which rise two twin towers. The materials used are red brick and stone, found in some isolated elements, such as the aforementioned portico.

In 1978 its restoration was promoted, which was carried out by the architect Antonio Ábalos Culebras.
