The Conciliar Seminary of Madrid is located on San Buenaventura Street in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain.
Today, in addition to the seminary of the archdiocese of Madrid, it also houses the San Justino Faculty of Christian and Classical Literature of the San Dámaso Ecclesiastical University.
The origin of the seminary is linked to the erection of the diocese of Madrid, an event that did not take place until March 7, 1885, when Pope Leo XIII separated the province of Madrid from the archdiocese of Toledo. This event required the establishment of a seminary in the new diocesan seat. Initially, it was established in the archbishop’s palace, on Pasa Street.
In 1891, based on a project by Francisco de Cubas y González-Montes, a diocesan architect, construction began on a building specifically intended for the training of the priests of the diocese at number 203 Paseo del Cisne (now Calle Eduardo Dato) (this claim is, however, refuted by Pedro Navascués, who claims not to have found any evidence of the involvement of the Marquis of Cubas in the design or construction of the Madrid seminary, although he does not rule out that he could have drawn up a project while he was directing the works on the Almudena Cathedral).
