The Church of San Lorenzo is a Catholic temple in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, located at number 2 on Doctor Piga Street, in the Lavapiés neighborhood. It is the center of the celebrations of the San Lorenzo festival.
History
Although it has been said that the current Church of San Lorenzo occupies the site where there was supposedly once a synagogue, in the Lavapiés neighborhood, the truth is that in the time of the Catholic Monarchs the limits of Madrid were delimited by the medieval wall, so this area was suburban and was not built on. That same legend claims that the street that runs in front of the main facade, after the expulsion of the Jews, was renamed Calle de la Fe.
Between 1942 and 1950, a new and modest temple was rebuilt according to the design of the brothers Sixto and Antonio Cámara Niño, and inaugurated on August 9, 1950.
