The Oratory of the Holy Christ of the Olive Grove, also known as the Oratory of the Olive Grove, is a Catholic church in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain.
It is located at number 4 on Cañizares Street, almost opposite the Church of San Sebastián, near Atocha Street. Since 1966 it has held the status of a parish church.
History
The origin of the oratory dates back to the 17th century. In 1608 the Royal Congregation of the Unworthy Slaves of the Most Holy Sacrament was founded, a pious association whose purpose was the exaltation of the Eucharist; The congregation enjoyed great success from the beginning among the faithful of Madrid and had the support of royalty.
After having its headquarters in successive churches in Madrid, in 1647 the congregation erected its own headquarters with a church and a house on land that it had previously purchased, entrusting the works to the master Manuel Aguiar. The following year the oratory was inaugurated.
The oratory houses is La Virgen del Rosario, one of the best sculptural groups by Luis Salvador Carmona. In this sculpture, the sculptor from Valladolid shows his mastery of movement and the legacy of the great Castilian sculpture of which he was a successor.
