Teatro Alcázar (Madrid)

The Alcázar Theatre (formerly known as the Palacio de los Recreos and the Alkázar Theatre) is a theatre on Calle de Alcalá in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, opened in 1925 on the ruins of the old Trianón Palace.

History

On the site of number 20 Calle Alcalá, which had been occupied by the original Trianón Palace, the lavish construction of the new Teatro Alkázar (called that way until 1940, when the Franco regime banned all names with a foreign air) began at the beginning of the 1920s, based on the project of Eduardo Sánchez Eznarriaga, who died before the work was completed, which would be in the hands of Eduardo Lozano Lardet.

Although much of its history has been linked to the Spanish musical revue genre (with divas such as Celia Gámez, Lina Morgan and Esperanza Roy), at the beginning of the 1930s it operated as a movie theatre, being one of the first theatres to incorporate a sound projector. From 26 April 2012 it was sponsored by the Cofidis company and became known as the Teatro Alcázar-Cofidis.
