Renfe 040: Spanish steam locomotive

RENFE Serie 040-2091—2127

RENFE 040-2091–2127 is a series of steam locomotives of the Spanish National Railway Network (RENFE). These locomotives belonged to the old series 2501–2537, built for the Compañía de los Caminos de Hierro del Norte de España (Iron Roads of Northern Spain). Only one example of this series survives today, locomotive RENFE 040-2095.

History

This series of locomotives was designed and built by the French company Schneider et Cie for the Compañía de los Caminos de Hierro del Norte de España. The first 25 examples entered service in 1863, with 12 more following the following year. Throughout their history, these locomotives were used to haul freight cars on the difficult sections of the Madrid–Avila and Madrid-Segovia lines. In 1941, after the nationalization of the Spanish railways, these locomotives became the property of RENFE.

By 1949, these locomotives were assigned to various depots: Madrid, Valladolid, Tarragona, Irun, Miranda de Ebro, Zaragoza, Leon, Oviedo and Monforte de Lemos.
