Teatro La Latina (Madrid)

Teatro de La Latina is a theatre in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, located in the Plaza de la Cebada in the homonymous Latina district, designed by architect Pedro Muguruza Otaño.

It has been one of the most important stages for the performance of comedy and revue in the history of theatre in Spain throughout the 20th century.

It owes its name to Beatriz Galindo, la Latina, a Castilian humanist and writer from the 15th century, a teacher of Queen Isabella I of Castile.

History

This Madrid theatre was created in the first decade of the 20th century by the antique dealer Juan Lafora Calatayud, from a cinema built on the grounds of an old hospital. In the theatre, named under the pseudonym of Beatriz Galindo, La Latina, companies such as those of Emilio Sagi, Salvador Videgain or the maestro Guerrero performed until the 1930s. It was a cinema again during the civil war.

In 1945 it was bought for her son by Dolores Díez, mother of Luis Fernández-Díez, married to Victoria Cuenca. Around 1955-56 it was rented to Ignacio Fernández Iquino and later to the businessman Matías Colsada, who would buy it forty years later, in 1977. Specialised in magazine and variety shows, the theatre was acquired by Lina Morgan in 1978, although Colsada never disassociated herself from it: she did not remove her name from the address of the premises until she saw it paid for in 1983.

In June 2010, the actress sold the theatre to the company Focus-Penta S.L., formed by the Catalan group Focus and the Madrid-based production company Pentación espectáculos.
