The Buëch or Buech, in Provençal Buech, is a river in the South of France which takes its source in the town of Lus-la-Croix-Haute (Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) and flows into the Durance at Sisteron (Alpes-de -Haute-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur).
The length of its course is 85.2 kilometers. It is therefore a sub-tributary of the Rhône. To distinguish it from its main tributary, the Petit Buëch, it is sometimes called “Grand Buëch” on its upper course, up to the confluence.
The catchment area of the river is 1,100 km².
The valley brings together numerous natural habitats subject to both Mediterranean and mountain influences in which the river is an economic and ecological wealth.
The SMIGIBA (Mixed Union of Intercommunity Management of Buëch and its Tributaries) is responsible for its management and protection, a large part of its basin is classified as a Natura 2000 “Buëch” site over 2,340 hectares and more than 110 kilometers of course of water. It includes the Grand Buëch, the Petit Buëch, the Torrent de la Blême and the Buëch aval.
