Teatro Albéniz (Madrid)

The Albéniz Theatre is one of the most central theatres in Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain, located at number 11 on Calle de la Paz. It opened, with a capacity of one thousand seats, in 1945, and closed in 2008. After various legal problems, it reopened in 2022 as part of a theatre-hotel and leisure room complex. The theatre was initially designed by a group of architects, of which Manuel Ambrós Escanellas stands out.

History

At the beginning of the 1940s, the developer Maximino Moro commissioned the construction of a theatre to two architects: José Luis Durán de Cottes and Rafael López Izquierdo. When the work was well advanced, Manuel Ambrós Escanellas joined and was in charge of the façade and interior decoration of the theatre. Construction was carried out on a plot of just over one thousand three hundred square metres and began in 1943.

In 2018, the Community of Madrid declared it a Heritage Site, thus raising its level of protection.

Acquired by the Silicius real estate company, it underwent a comprehensive renovation, together with the old Hotel Madrid, maintaining the protected elements and recovering the wooden automata on Ángel Ferrant’s façade. Under the name UMusic Hotel Madrid, it is part of a cultural and hotel complex with 130 rooms, 898 seats and a room for events and shows. It opened in November 2022 with the musical Company, directed by and starring Antonio Banderas.
