71-911 «City Star» / 71-911ЕМ «Львёнок»
71-911 “City Star” and its modification 71-911EM “Lion Cub” are Russian four-axle passenger motor four-door single-sided low-floor tram cars. They are manufactured by the company “PC Transport Systems” at the facilities of the Tver Carriage Works.
The modification 71-911EM is also manufactured at NZET in St. Petersburg and in December 2020, they began to be produced in Engels at the plant of the former TrolZa.
The first single-section tram car in the CIS with a completely low floor. It is an analogue of the design fully low-floor car 71-625, which UKVZ planned to produce.
History
For the first time, it became known about the work of Russian designers on a new model of a tram car with a completely low floor in the early 2000s. The Ust-Katav Carriage Works (UKVZ) planned to begin serial production of such a car in September 2002. This tram car 71-625 had no analogues in the CIS.
However, for a number of reasons, the plant’s plans were not implemented within the planned timeframe. The plant’s design department managed to return to the development and design of this model only in 2013.
In October 2013, representatives of the Trading House of the Ust-Katav Carriage Works held a presentation of new tram bogies at the Gorelectrotransport enterprise in Nizhnekamsk. Based on these bogies, UKVZ planned to begin production of fully low-floor single tram cars.
In early 2014, UKVZ ceased cooperation with the Trading House, which owned the rights to the bogie design for the new car. One of the former founders of the UKVZ Trading House created the company PC Transport Systems. He invited the chief designer of UKVZ and bought the design documentation for the bogie from the Trading House. A new model of tram car with the index 71-911, which is an analogue of the tram car 71-625, was created at the facilities of the Tver Carriage Works.
The total amount of investment in research and development work to create two prototypes of trams with a completely low floor level was 10 million euros. A single-section four-axle tram 71-911 and a three-section six-axle tram 71-931 were created.
The tramcar is 80% made of Russian parts.
The imported equipment includes Finnish doors, a Czech engine and an Austrian gearbox.
The remaining parts, including aluminum profiles for the interior of the cabin, electromechanical brakes, a set of electrical equipment, polymer parts for the exterior and interior of the driver’s cabin, a climate control system and an air conditioner, are supplied by twenty Russian companies. Among them are Krasnoyarsk Machine-Building Components, Parus, Kanopus Group of Companies, Ural Polymer, Etna and Technika Transporta.
Design
The tram has a modular design, which makes it possible to create a whole family of tram cars of different capacities and lengths based on it.
The key element of the tram is the patented design of the tram bogie. It is elastic, which makes the tram less demanding on the condition of the track. This, in turn, ensures a smoother ride, reduces the noise level when the tram is moving and increases the comfort of passengers in the cabin.
Bogie
The trams manufactured by PK Transport Systems LLC use low-floor bogies equipped with traditional wheel sets. To increase the width of the aisle for passengers, axle boxes were placed above the bogie, the gearbox was installed as close to the wheel as possible, and the disc brake was on the engine shaft.
Such bogies have two suspension stages: over-axle box and central. Coil springs and rubber-metal elastic elements are used for shock absorption.
It is important to note that both bogies in the 71-911 tram model are rotary.
Tests
At the end of June 2014, the tram car was sent for testing to the Bauman Moscow Depot, where it received the tail number 0202. The car had to pass an interdepartmental commission and certification. After the tests were completed, it was planned to start operating this car with passengers in Moscow. On October 28, 2014, the 71-911 model tram received an act from the interdepartmental commission, allowing its launch into serial production.
In 2018, the 71-911EM was tested in Perm, local residents appreciated the tram’s quietness, smooth ride, safety, climate control systems, and more. Later in 2019-2020, MUP PermGorElektroTrans purchased eight such trams.
71-911EM “Львёнок” (Lion Cub)
The “Lvenok” tram car is a completely redesigned version of the well-proven 71-911 tram car. The new car is based on a unique low-floor, rotating, elastic bogie of our own design and production.
The driver’s cabin provides excellent visibility and convenience for the driver. The tram also has an interactive control system, an external video surveillance system for passenger boarding and disembarking areas, as well as for the traffic situation. In addition, the tram has additional elements that improve the safety of the driver’s workplace, and systems that help the driver control the tram.
“Lvenok” is a modern, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and elegant new generation city tram.
