IZh Jupiter

Иж Юпитер

IZh Yupiter (Jupiter) is a middle-class road motorcycle designed for driving on roads with any surface. It was produced at the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant from 1961 to 1966. This motorcycle marked the beginning of a whole series, the last representative of which (“IZh Jupiter-5”) was released in 2008.

History

In the second half of 1958, the designers of the bureau faced a new task – preparation for the production of the Izh Jupiter motorcycle. Already in 1957, at the World Exhibition in Brussels, a prototype of the new model was presented, which was initially called “IZh-58”, and then renamed “IZh-Jupiter”.

The first prototypes showed excellent results. The engine power was increased to 18 horsepower, and the gearbox became more convenient to operate. In addition, bearing lubrication was improved, which increased the reliability of the motorcycle.

Engine production was organized at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant. Serial production of the Izh Jupiter began in the second half of 1961.

Design

The motorcycle inherited the chassis from the IZh-56, but received a completely new engine – a two-cylinder, two-stroke, with a vertical transverse arrangement of cylinders. It had air cooling and a return-loop two-jet purge. The working mixture was prepared in the carburetor and ignited in the cylinder by an electric spark.

The carburetor was closed with special casings equipped with a metal valve for easy access during start-up. The air filter was a contact-oil filter. The parts of the connecting rod and piston group, such as the piston, connecting rod, piston rings, piston pin, retaining rings and bearing rollers of the lower connecting rod head, were unified with similar parts of the K-175 motorcycle engine.

On the left side of the gearbox housing there are two pedals: a double-arm pedal for foot shifting and a kickstarter. Like all subsequent two-cylinder models, the IZh-Jupiter was equipped with an automatic clutch release mechanism.

The speedometer drive, unlike the IZh-56, is from the front wheel. The front sprung mudguard is attached to a cast bracket to the lower bridge of the front fork, which eliminates the possibility of it becoming clogged with dirt.

Modifications

The IZh Jupiter-K is a modification of the IZh Jupiter motorcycle, equipped with a sidecar (sidecar) BP-58, which was previously used on the IZh-56K, or the more modern BP-62. The sidecar wheel suspension is torsion bar, and the sidecar body has a spring suspension.

Modernizations

“Izh Jupiter” served as the beginning of a whole series of two-cylinder motorcycles:

  • “Izh Jupiter-2” (1965-1971) — engine power 19 HP at 4900 rpm.
  • “Izh Jupiter-3” (1971-1977) — power increased by almost 40 percent compared to its predecessor (25 HP at 5700 rpm). The model was awarded the USSR State Quality Mark.
  • “Izh Jupiter-3-01” (1977-1980) — engine power increased to 27 HP.
  • “Izh Jupiter-3-02” (1979-1981).
  • “Izh Jupiter-4” (1982-1985) — engine power increased to 28 HP at 6,200 rpm, torque up to 3.58 kgf m, 12-volt electrical equipment, new lighting technology.
  • “Izh Jupiter-5” (IZH 6.113; IZH 6.114) (1985-1988) – engine power was reduced to 24 HP at 4800-5600 rpm, but the torque characteristic in the medium speed range was improved. An “emergency start” button appeared, short-circuiting the excitation winding of the generator to ground, bypassing the voltage regulator, when starting with a dead battery.
  • “Izh Jupiter-5-01” (IZH 6.113-01; IZH 6.114-01) (since 1988) – the motorcycle received a completely new appearance, unified with the IZH Planeta released in 1987. The shape of such elements as the fuel tank, toolbox lids, seat, and dashboard has been changed. Two cooling fins have been added to the engine cylinders, nine instead of seven, with the front part of each fin bent towards the cooling air flow. A wide engine chain has been installed, as a result of which the teeth of the engine sprocket and the large clutch drum have been changed.
  • “Izh Jupiter-5-03” (Izh 6.113-03; Izh 6.114-03) (since 1993) – the model is equipped with a liquid-cooled engine IZH-Yu5 Sb. 1-08. Fuel consumption has been reduced by 1.5-2 liters, the noise level has been reduced by 30%, engine power is 25 HP.
