The Chevrolet Corvette C8 is the eighth generation of the iconic sports car, which American automaker Chevrolet unveiled in 2019. It is the first rear-engine Corvette since 1953.

The C8 premiered on July 18, 2019, in California, and the convertible was unveiled in October of the same year at an event at the Kennedy Space Center dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. Production began on February 3, 2020, but the 2019 General Motors strike pushed back the schedule.

The C8 became the basis for two racing modifications: the Corvette C8.R and the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R.

It replaced the seventh generation.

Overview

The Corvette C8 is GM’s first rear-engine sports car since the Pontiac Fiero era. It features a radically new design, aluminum architecture, and adjustable stiffness springs instead of the previous monoleaf springs. The exterior has become more aggressive, with enlarged air intakes and expressive side air ducts. A 12-inch (305 mm) digital screen replaces the instrument panel, displaying one of six driving modes.

Model range

Stingray

The C8 Stingray comes in three trim levels (1LT, 2LT, 3LT) with three suspension options (FE1, FE3, FE4) and three seat types (GT1, GT2, Competition Sport). The interior is available in leather, microfiber, or fabric with carbon fiber and aluminum accents. A high-resolution camera and a new interface for recording performance data have been added.

The C8 uses a new 6.2-liter naturally aspirated LT2 V8 engine with 490 HP and 630 Nm of torque. It features a dry sump lubrication system and cylinder deactivation under low loads. The Z51 package adds a third radiator and increases power to 495 HP. Acceleration time to 100 km/h with the Z51 package is 2.9 seconds.

The C8 is equipped with an 8-speed Tremec automatic transmission with paddle shifters. A manual transmission is not available.

The base model has a double-wishbone suspension made of forged aluminum and monotube shock absorbers. The Z51 package adds an adjustable suspension with stiff springs and shock absorbers. The Magnetic Selective Ride Control system with Performance Traction Management and an electronic limited-slip differential is available as an option.

The C8 is equipped with an 8-inch screen with Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus, Bluetooth, 4G, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Higher trim levels feature a Bose audio system and navigation. Optional features include a Performance Data Recorder and a rearview mirror with a camera.

Z06

The Z06 is a version of the Chevrolet Corvette with an LT6 engine, unveiled in October 2021 and released in 2022 as a homologation car for 2023. The model has three trim levels (1LZ, 2LZ, 3LZ) and an optional Z07 Performance package.

The LT6 is a 5.5-liter flat-plane crankshaft V8 that produces 670 HP and 624 lb-ft of torque. The engine uses cast aluminum blocks, titanium intake and sodium exhaust valves, forged pistons and connecting rods, and an active split intake manifold.

The Z06 is equipped with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 5.56:1 final drive ratio, allowing it to accelerate to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds. The suspension includes an electronic limited-slip differential and adaptive Magnet Ride system, while the Z07 package adds a track-oriented suspension.

The base Z06 has a front splitter and rear spoiler, while the Z07 package adds larger aerodynamic elements and removes elements under the splitter. The Z06 develops 1.22g of lateral acceleration and covers the quarter mile in 10.6 seconds. Top speed is 195 mph (312 km/h).

E-Ray

The hybrid version of the C8 Corvette E-Ray was unveiled on January 17, 2023. It features Z06 body elements, wheels, a 6.2-liter engine, and a DCT transmission from the C8 Stingray, as well as a new 1.9 kWh hybrid battery. The E-Ray is the fastest production Corvette with all-wheel drive and a hybrid system. Production began in 2024.

Specifications: 655 HP, 807 Nm of torque, 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds, top speed of 293 km/h.

ZR1

The Corvette ZR1 was unveiled on July 25, 2024, in Miami. It is the most powerful production Corvette with a 5.5-liter LT7 engine, twin turbochargers, and 1064 HP at 7000 rpm, mated to an 8-speed transmission. Dry weight is 1665 kg, convertible is 1705 kg. Rear-wheel drive, maximum speed is 373 km/h. Acceleration to 100 km/h in 2.3 seconds (with ZTK package) and 2.5 seconds (without ZTK).

ZR1X

The 2026 Corvette ZR1X is a hybrid version of the C8 Corvette with a 5.5-liter V8 LT7 and twin turbochargers, as well as an upgraded electric motor and all-wheel drive system from E-Ray. Power output is 1,250 HP, with acceleration to 100 km/h in less than 2 seconds. Lateral acceleration is up to 1.0 g thanks to improvements in the chassis control system. Aerodynamics have been improved, including a carbon fiber splitter and anti-wing. The standard braking system with 10-piston front and 6-piston rear Alcon calipers and carbon-ceramic discs provides 1.9 g of deceleration at speeds of 180-120 mph. The ZR1X set a lap record at the Nürburgring of 6:49.275, beating the Ford Mustang GTD.
