The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, commonly known as the “Evo,” is a Lancer-based sports sedan and rally car produced by the Japanese company Mitsubishi Motors from 1992 to 2016. There are ten official versions, each designated by a Roman numeral. The VIII replaced the seventh generation and was succeeded by the ninth.

VIII Generation

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII debuted in 2003 with 17-inch Enkei wheels, Brembo brakes, Bilstein shock absorbers, and a 5-speed manual transmission. Under the hood is a powerful 2.0-liter engine producing 276 HP (206 kW), making it one of the fastest cars in its class.

Initially, the Evolution VIII was offered in only one trim level, but its popularity was so high that four versions were released by 2005. The base GSR model was available in Japan, while the RS offered a more basic trim without extras like ambient lighting and a radio.

The SSL version featured a sunroof, a trunk-mounted subwoofer, and leather seats. The top-of-the-line MR model featured an upgraded limited-slip differential, an aluminum shift knob, a carbon fiber handbrake, and a 6-speed transmission. It also received new black headlights and 17-inch BBS wheels.

In Japan, the Evolution VIII MR received upgraded Bilstein shock absorbers, an aluminum roof, and changes to the body weight, lowering the center of gravity and improving handling. Mitsubishi’s electronic all-wheel drive system was refined, and the traction control and ABS systems received sportier settings.

American-made 2003-2004 GSRs featured the 5-speed transmission from the Evolution VII, while the 2004 RS models featured a limited-slip front differential. 2005 MR versions received a 6-speed transmission, an aluminum roof, and other improvements. Boost pressure and engine tuning were reduced to meet American emissions standards.

All Evolutions featured lightweight aluminum fenders and hoods. American-made 2003-2005 models featured massive rear bumpers due to safety requirements. The base RS model was equipped with air conditioning.

Mechanical improvements included an S-AWC rear differential and a reinforced cylinder head. These changes made the Evolution VIII one of the most powerful and technically advanced models of its time.
