“Verkhovyna” is a famous brand of Soviet mopeds and mokiks, produced by the Lviv Motorcycle Plant (LMZ).
The first in this series was the moped “Verkhovyna-3” (MP-048). It differed from the previous two-speed models (MP-043 and MP-046) in its more modern design and technical improvements. Serial production began in 1970.
Model range
Verkhovyna-3
The moped “Verkhovyna-3” is the first model of the “Verkhovyna” series, released under the index MP-048 in 1970.
This new series was distinguished by the Sh-51K engine, which was similar to the engine of the popular moped “Jawa Stadion”. The maximum speed of the moped was 60 km/h.
Verkhovyna-4
The LMZ-2-152 model was produced since 1973. It had a “moped” saddle with a glove compartment under the seat and a modified tank with chrome lining. Initially, the Sh-52 engine was installed, later – Sh-57. In the Soviet film The Adventures of Elektronik we can see an early version of the Verkhovyna-4. It differed from later models by the absence of linings on the fuel tank.
Verkhovyna-5
The LMZ-2.153 model was produced since 1975. Its design has undergone significant changes: a horizontal tank, a new trunk and a modernized front fork appeared. The Sh-57 engine is installed under the hood.
Verkhovyna-6
The LMZ-2.158 model, as well as its modification LMZ-2.158-1, were produced since 1977. The Verkhovyna moped with the Sh-57 engine was considered the fastest in the USSR. These mopeds had new gas tank pads, a modified saddle, and later models had new fenders, side covers, and engines.
Verkhovyna-7
The LMZ-2.159 moped was launched in 1980. Its main difference from the previous model was a new engine with an electronic ignition system. Externally, the moped stood out with a headlight with a remote speedometer and a blue high-beam indicator light, like on the Riga-22 moped.
Unlike the contact ignition system, which often broke down, the Verkhovyna-7 had a reliable electronic ignition with an inductive sensor and a thyristor switch. This was an innovation for Soviet technology at that time. The Minsk and Voskhod motorcycles were equipped with a similar system.
Verkhovyna-Sport
“Verkhovyna-Sport” was created on the basis of the “Verkhovyna-6” and “Verkhovyna-7” models. Unlike the standard version, the “Sport” model had a raised and shifted to the right muffler with a different exhaust pipe, as well as an additional heat shield. Instead of a trunk, there was a simplified mount for the rear light.
Verkhovyna-Tourist
Verkhovyna-Tourist is a modification with a windshield and brackets made of chromed steel rod. It was produced on the basis of all models.
