GAZelle NEXT

GAZelle NEXT

“GAZelle Next” is a family of Russian light-duty trucks, serial production of which began at the Gorky Automobile Plant on April 9, 2013. The models represent the second generation of GAZ light-duty trucks and are the “successors” of the GAZelle Business family of models. The new model (factory index A21RXX) differs from the previous one in its new Next generation cabin with an ergonomic dashboard, airbags, electric windows and a number of innovations, as well as an extended wheelbase, a proprietary gearbox with a “joystick” gear shift, a new suspension, new brakes and a rack and pinion steering mechanism with power steering. A noticeable design difference from the previous generation models is the independent double wishbone front suspension – instead of a dependent spring suspension. Since 2014, the GAZelle NEXT series (A21RXX) has been supplemented with a double-cabin version (A22RXX), and since spring 2016 — with all-metal vans (A31RXX), including a combi version (A32RXX), on the basis of which small 14-17-seat buses (A65RXX) have been produced since 2017. Earlier (since March 2014), the production of frame-panel city small buses of the Citiline series (A63R4X and A64R4X) with a reinforced chassis was mastered.

Since November 2017, the reinforced flatbed model GAZelle Next (C41R92) with a gross weight of 4.6 tons has been produced, on the chassis of which the 17-cubic-meter CMF and 22-seat small bus A65R52 have been produced since spring 2019.

At the end of 2020, modifications with a VW EA189 diesel engine went on sale.

Development history

The production of prototypes began in 2011, in particular, for this purpose, a Quintus FlexForm hydroelastic stamping press was launched at the stamp and mold plant. A special feature of this press is the use of one-sided tooling (matrix), while the pressure created by the liquid reaches 100 MPa. The first product manufactured on the new equipment was the GAZelle-Next hood.

In 2012, it was planned to produce 300 copies of the GAZelle-Next model for trial operation with loyal consumers.

The prototype of the second series of GAZelle-Next was shown at the Moscow International Automobile Salon in September 2012.

On April 9, 2013, the serial launch of production was announced. Cars began to arrive in the dealer network on April 11. On the same day, the first car was purchased. The Sobol NEXT concept car was also presented, the serial production of which began only at the end of 2022.

Since March 24, 2014, serial production of a truck with a double cabin and a bus with a frame-panel body in urban and intercity versions began.

In May 2014, the model received the Single European Type Approval, which allows the sale of GAZelle NEXT vehicles in the countries of the European Union. In September 2014, assembly of cars for the local market began at the Mersa Otomotiv plant in Turkey.

In September 2015, an all-metal van was presented, its sales started in April 2016.

New family (restyling): GAZelle NN (New Next)

GAZelle NN (New Next) is a restyled version of GAZelle Next. The exterior of the new GAZelle cabin has been changed, because the designers chose LED optics for the front end. The architecture of the front end itself has remained the same and even bears a certain family style.

In detail, the new version of the Russian Next has a new hood – it has become more embossed, a plastic front bumper – the side “air intakes” have changed and another, central one has appeared, the radiator grille has received a stylish three-dimensional shape. The sides have remained the same, with the exception of the exterior mirror housings, which, as suggested by the GAZelle Next 2021 concept, will now be painted in the body color. Inside the cabin there is a new front panel with rectangular air ducts, a full-fledged multi-function steering wheel equipped with heating, and a central touch screen.

To the left of it are physical control buttons, below is a compact climate control console. To the right of the steering wheel is the engine start button, but the compartments for small items, although they have changed their shape, remain in their places, so the GAZelle driver will definitely not have to get used to a different storage system.

The driver’s seat has also been improved, which will become softer due to the air suspension. As for the two-seater sofa, you can make a comfortable table out of it by folding the back. The manufacturer promised that all current engines will remain in the ranks of the new Gazelle Next 2021 model year: 2.8-liter turbo diesel Cummins ISF engines with a capacity of 120 and 150 HP, as well as a 3.0-liter gasoline UMP Evotech and its analogue, in addition to gasoline, consuming liquefied propane.
