Jeep Compass (2nd Generation)
The Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV that was first introduced in 2007 as a 2008 model. It is currently in its second generation.
The first generation Compass, along with the renamed Patriot, were among Jeep’s first crossover SUVs. The second generation Compass debuted in September 2016 in Brazil.
II generation (MP/552)
The second generation Jeep Compass was unveiled on September 27, 2016, in Brazil and at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November of that year, replacing the Jeep Patriot and the first generation Compass.
Compass production for the North American market was moved to Toluca, Mexico, while Jeep Cherokee (KL) assembly was moved from Toledo, Ohio to Belvidere, Illinois, where the Compass and first generation Jeep Patriot were previously built.
Using a stretched version of the same platform as the Renegade, the Compass is available in four different trim levels:
- Base Sport
- Mid-range Latitude
- Expensive Limited
- Off-road-focused Trailhawk
All trim levels can be equipped with either front- or all-wheel drive, with the exception of the Trailhawk, which is offered exclusively with all-wheel drive.
In the U.S., the Compass is powered by a 2.4-liter Tigershark four-cylinder engine. More than 65 percent of the upper body and frame are made of high-strength steel.
The design of the second-generation Compass is inspired by its two larger siblings, the Jeep Cherokee (KL) and Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2). From the Grand Cherokee, it inherited the headlights integrated into the front grille and a narrow front grille with black trim. The Cherokee shares some rear styling elements, the basic interior design, and the 2.4-liter Tigershark inline-four (I4) gasoline engine and ZF-sourced 948TE nine-speed automatic transmission. These elements form the basis of the overall design of the Compass.
Production
The Compass is produced in factories in several countries: Italy, Mexico, Brazil, China, and India.
North American and European Compass models are assembled in Melfi, Italy (model code: BU/520), and Toluca, Mexico (model code: MP/522).
In Brazil, the second-generation Compass entered production on September 26, 2016, at FCA’s new plant in Goiana, Pernambuco (model code: M1/551). Chinese Compass models were built at the GAC Fiat Chrysler joint venture (model code: M4/553).
In preparation for the next-generation Compass, Stellantis’ Brampton, Ontario, Canada, plant will be retooled. Stellantis plans to invest US$970 million to upgrade the plant so that it can produce both internal combustion engine vehicles and battery electric vehicles.
Facelift
In 2020, the model’s first facelift was unveiled in China, which included minor changes to the car’s exterior and a complete redesign of the interior. In January 2021, the Compass facelift was launched in India.
The new car received a redesigned front profile, a larger grille, a new front bumper with a larger air intake, slimmer headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights, LED fog lights, and new alloy wheels.
In addition, the car is equipped with a semi-autonomous Highway Assist system, which allows you to drive it without hands on the steering wheel, leaving control of the road at an automated level.
Engines
Fiat (Stellantis) has unveiled 17 different engine and transmission combinations that will be available for the 2024 model year. Two variants will be available for the Brazilian market:
- A 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 166 horsepower.
- A 2.0-liter Fiat MultiJet diesel with 170 horsepower.
Other engines are expected depending on the market, such as the Fiat 1.4 MultiAir turbo gasoline engine with 140 and 170 horsepower, and for the US market, a 2.4-liter Tigershark naturally aspirated engine with 184 horsepower. Also planned is the latest Fiat 1.6 diesel with 120 horsepower, as well as the new 2.2-liter engine that powers the Alfa Romeo Giulia.
At the 2020 Brussels Motor Show, Jeep unveiled a new model, the 4xe plug-in petrol hybrid, released in a limited series called the First Edition. This vehicle is equipped with a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor located on the rear wheels. As a result, the total power reaches 240 horsepower.
