The BMW M4 is a sports-oriented version of the BMW 4 Series, created by the BMW Motorsport division, BMW M GmbH, and launched in 2014.

Following the change in numbering, when the 3 Series coupes and convertibles became part of the new 4 Series, the M4 took the place of the corresponding versions of the BMW M3. Improvements over the standard 4 Series include a revised engine, upgraded suspension, exhaust system and braking system, as well as weight reduction measures, including the increased use of carbon fiber. This applies, for example, to the roof and door panels.

Second generation (G82/G83)

The second generation BMW M4 (G82) largely mirrors the standard 4 Series (G22), which was previewed by the BMW Concept 4. This high-performance variant of the G22 debuted in November 2020, with global sales starting in early 2021.

Key improvements to the G82 M4 include increased power to 473 hp and the double kidney grille from the 4 Series. The convertible version (G83) with a soft top that opens and closes in 18 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h was introduced in May 2021. In Competition trim, it features M xDrive all-wheel drive. The convertible’s top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but with the optional M Driver’s Package it can reach 280 km/h. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 3.6 seconds.

In North America, the standard M4 will only be available with a manual transmission, while the M4 Competition will be exclusively automatic.

M4 Competition

In 2020, the M4 Competition model was introduced simultaneously with the standard M4. Compared to the base model, the M4 Competition received an increased power output of 22 kW (or 30 hp) – now totaling 375 kW (510 hp). Torque also increased by 100 Nm (74 lb-ft) to 650 Nm (479 lb-ft). This car is only available with an 8-speed M Steptronic Sport automatic transmission.

xDrive

Competition models with the xDrive system accelerate from 0 to 60 mph faster than rear-wheel-drive versions. They require only 2.8 seconds, while rear-wheel-drive models need 3.6 seconds.

M4 CS

BMW introduced the new 2025 BMW M4 CS. The car features a more powerful S58 twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. Its power output is 543 hp, which is 20 hp more than the standard BMW M4 Competition. The M4 CS is also 35 kg (77 pounds) lighter compared to the M4 Competition xDrive. These improvements allow the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 3.4 seconds.
