Karpaty

«Карпаты»

“Karpaty” (Carpathians) is a Soviet moped, produced at the Lviv Motorcycle Plant (LMZ). In 1970, the production of the “Verkhovyna” series began, which became an important milestone in Soviet motorcycle technology. Since the spring of 1981, the plant began producing the “Karpaty-1” model, which was replaced in 1986 by the modernized “Karpaty-2”. This moped was similar to the “Delta” from the Riga Motorcycle Plant.

Since 1984, it was planned to produce the “Lvov” moped (LMZ-2.170) with an M531/541 KG-40 engine manufactured by the German company Simson.

Model range

Karpaty (LMZ-2.160, LMZ-2.160C, LMZ-2.160-01) were equipped with engines Š-58, Š-62, Š-62M and V-50.

Karpaty-2.1 (LMZ-1985) stood out with D6 engines with one speed, produced in small series. The frame of the moped “Delta” was taken as a basis.

Karpaty-2 (LMZ-2.161) differed from Karpaty in the shape of the tank (without round rubber bands and plastic covers on the frame until 1986), square taillight and V-50 engine with manual switching or V-501 with foot switching.

Karpaty-2 Lux (LMZ-2.161L, LMZ-2.161L-01) featured turn signal lights and a reinforced 15 kg luggage rack. The model was equipped with V-50 or V-501 engines.

Karpaty-2 Sport (LMZ-2.161S, LMZ-2.161S-01) is a sports modification with an exhaust pipe with a casing, a steering wheel with an additional crossbar, a modified shape of the rear luggage rack and front wing mounts. Between the taillight and the seat there is a handle-bar for carrying. These mopeds were painted red, orange, green, cherry and beige. They were equipped with V-50 or V-501 engines.

Karpaty-2 Cross (LMZ-2.752) was created for children’s and youth sports schools. The model was not equipped with lighting devices, but had a larger front wheel, adjustable suspension, off-road tires and plates for starting numbers. In 1989, about 500 units were produced, they were not available for retail sale. The model was equipped with a V-501 engine.
