Иж-56
IZh-56 is a middle-class road motorcycle for solo trips or with a passenger. It is designed for use on different types of roads. It was produced at the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant from 1956 to 1962. Since 1962, the IZh Planeta motorcycle was launched based on the IZh-56 model.
The motorcycle has changed dramatically compared to previous models. The stamped frame received a tubular design, deep wheel guards appeared, protecting from dust and dirt. The motorcycle was offered in two versions: with separate and double saddles. The carburetor and air cleaner were protected by casings, which gave the motorcycle a modern look.
Design
The motorcycle is equipped with a single-cylinder, two-stroke engine with air cooling and return-loop scavenging. Unlike its predecessor, the IZh-49, the IZh-56 engine has an aluminum cylinder. The crankshaft is assembled, pressed, and the crankcase is of the block type. The front part of the crankcase includes the crank chamber, and the rear part – the gearbox. The crankcase is divided into two halves along the middle longitudinal plane. The manual gear shift lever, unlike the IZh-49, is not located on the tank, but is a vertical lever on the right side of the engine.
