BMW X5 (G05)

BMW X5 (G05)

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW’s first SUV. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.

IV Generation (G05)

G05 is the internal designation of the fourth generation of the BMW X5 SUV, which was unveiled in November 2018. The X5 M model has the internal designation F95.

In November 2019, at the Los Angeles Auto Show, BMW unveiled the new M versions of its X5 and X6 models. These cars will be equipped with the same engine as the BMW M5 F90. Production of these models began in April 2020.

Production takes place at the BMW plant in Spartanburg, Georgia, USA. Since mid-2019, cars have also been assembled at the BMW plant in Araquari, Brazil.

Complete Knock Down kits are used to modify the cars, which significantly reduces assembly time and costs.

More than 165,000 vehicles were delivered in 2019 and 2020. Since 2022, BMW Brilliance Automotive has begun production of the extended version of the X5 in China.

In June 2018, BMW introduced the G05 model in three variants: X5 xDrive40i, X5 xDrive50i and X5 xDrive30d. In August of the same year, the plug-in hybrid version of the X5 xDrive45e iPerformance was introduced.

In May 2019, another model was introduced – the X5 M50i, which has similar external characteristics to the X5 M50d. This variant began to be produced in August 2019.

The trunk holds 645 liters in a five-seater configuration. The instrument panel is equipped with digital displays (“BMW Live Cockpit Professional”). Its operating system allows software updates over the air.

Body

Compared to the previous model, the wheelbase has been increased by 42 mm. The body is again equipped with a two-section tailgate, which is now fully opened and closed electrically, unlike the previous model, where only the upper wing was electrically operated.

The drag coefficient for the 30d is 0.31, while for the other models it is 0.32.

Chassis

The chassis is equipped with adaptive dampers and steel springs as standard. An air suspension for both axles with an adjustable range of 8 cm is optionally available, which increases ground clearance off-road.

All wheels are equipped with ventilated disc brakes. Wheels with a diameter of 18 to 22 inches can be selected from the factory.

Engine

All engines available in Europe comply with the Euro 6d Temp emission standard. A V8 petrol engine (xDrive50i) is not available in Europe. Power is transmitted via an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission with Steptronic.

The G05 was introduced with a six-cylinder B58 petrol engine, which was updated in October 2018. In August 2019, the engine range was expanded with the addition of two new variants:

  • xDrive25d is the entry-level model with an in-line four-cylinder diesel engine, which is characterized by its economy and efficiency.
  • X5 M50i is an additional variant with a V8 petrol engine, which develops a maximum output of 390 kW (530 HP).

All versions available in Europe are equipped with the xDrive all-wheel drive system with a rear axle offset to the side. In the US, a model with a petrol engine and rear-wheel drive (sDrive40i) is also available.

The plug-in hybrid, available since autumn 2019, is equipped with a petrol engine with a maximum output of 230 kW and a synchronous generator integrated into the transmission. This generator is capable of developing a peak output of up to 145 kW.

The battery has a useful capacity of about 21 kWh, which allows the car to travel up to 110 kilometers on electric traction.

Restyling

In March 2023, for the 2024 model year, the X5 LCI was launched into production. It received an updated front grille and bumper, as well as completely redesigned optics – headlights and taillights – and a new wheel design. In addition, the X5 was equipped with the Highway Assistant driving assistant, which previously appeared in the G70 7 Series.

The 2024 X5 xDrive50e now has 483 horsepower (360 kW) and an all-electric range of 40 miles (64 kilometers). This is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) more and 94 horsepower (70 kilowatts) more than the pre-restyling model.

The update also affected the BMW X6.

Models

X5 M (F95)

At the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show, BMW unveiled its top-of-the-line 2020 models, the X5 M and X5 M Competition. Both versions are powered by a powerful 4.4-liter S63 Twin-Turbo V8 engine.

The Competition versions differ from the standard model by an upgraded exhaust system, larger rear wheels and tires, as well as the presence of a Track mode and upgraded standard leather upholstery.

X5 xDrive45e

In 2019, BMW introduced its new plug-in hybrid variant, the X5 xDrive45e. It was launched in the US market in the summer of 2020.

This model is equipped with a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery, which is paired with a 3.0-liter B58 I6 turbo engine and an electric motor producing 113 HP (84 kW).

The European models use a 21.6 kWh battery, while in the US the figure is only 17.06 kWh. The US model has a range of 30 miles (48 km).

X5 LWB

In China, BMW has introduced a long-wheelbase version of its X5, codenamed G18. This car is available in two versions: X5 xDrive30Li and X5 xDrive40Li. Since April 2022, this model has been produced by the BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture at a modernized plant in Shenyang.

The G18 has a 130 mm (5.1 in) longer wheelbase than the regular G05, providing additional legroom for rear passengers. This feature is also reflected in the longer rear doors, which make it easier to access the second row of seats.

iX5

The iX5 is a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) version of the X5 SUV, which was unveiled as a concept at the 2019 IAA. It went on sale in February 2023.

The iX5 has a maximum output of 295 kW (401 HP) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (0–62 mph) in under 6 seconds. Thanks to two high-pressure fuel tanks, the car has a range of more than 504 kilometers (313 miles).

The 2018 X5 received a five-star overall rating in Euro NCAP testing.
