Series 5600

The Series 5600, better known as Eurosprinter or Siemens, is a type of electric locomotive in service with operators Comboios de Portugal and Medway. This series is made up of 30 Iberian gauge locomotives, with 5600 kW of power, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 220 km/h. They entered service in 1993.

They were originally adapted for universal use, that is, both for passenger trains at high speeds and for heavy freight trains, they were built by a Portuguese-German consortium which includes the companies Siemens-Österreichische Bundesbahnen, which deals with electrical equipment, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co KG-Asea Brown Boveri-Henschel for mechanical parts, and the Portuguese group Sociedades Reunidas de Fabricações Metálicas. The original contract provided for the construction of thirty units, which would be delivered at a rate of one per month, and if necessary, the order could be increased to 48 locomotives.
