Mercedes-Benz SL R232 Roadster
The Mercedes-Benz SL (R232) is the seventh generation of the roadster in the SL-Class family, succeeding the R231 model. Unveiled on 28 October 2021, the R232 replaced the GT Roadster. Until the arrival of the Mercedes-Maybach SL in August 2024, it was sold exclusively under the Mercedes-AMG brand.
Design
The R232 differs from its SL-Class predecessors in the design of its folding roof. Instead of a hydraulically operated metal roof, it now features an electrically operated fabric roof, reducing the car’s weight by 21 kg. This improves handling and lowers the centre of gravity. The R232 is also equipped with the fourth generation of Mercedes’ all-wheel-drive system, 4Matic, and a rear-axle steering mechanism.
The R232 sees the return of the 2+2 seating layout, which had not been used in the SL since the C107 and R129 models. The dashboard is symmetrical: in the centre is an 11.9-inch touchscreen display, flanked by 12.3-inch digital screens. According to Mercedes, this layout reduces sun glare and improves visibility when the roof is closed. The touchscreen can be tilted vertically for better readability.
The car’s platform is an aluminium monocoque chassis, developed by AMG to enhance rigidity. Lateral and longitudinal stiffness have been increased by 50% and 40% respectively compared to the GT roadster.
Technical specifications
When the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class was launched, only one engine was available — a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. It came in two power variants: the SL 55 4MATIC+ and the SL 63 4MATIC+. The SL 55 delivers 350 kW (476 HP) and 700 Nm of torque, whilst the SL 63 delivers a more powerful 430 kW (585 HP) and 800 Nm. A six-cylinder in-line engine and a hybrid version of the V8 are set to follow.
The SL 43 is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine. It produces 280 kW (381 HP) and 480 Nm of torque. An additional 10 kW of power has been added for the mild hybrid. This is the first time since the launch of the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL that the SL-Class has been fitted with an inline 4-cylinder engine.
