Spain has strengthened its commitment to transparency and digital innovation by officially joining the International Open Data Charter (ODC). The adhesion, carried out through the country’s General State Administration, was announced during the IX Global Summit of the Open Government Partnership, held in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The International Open Data Charter, launched in 2015, is a global initiative supported by governments, organizations, and experts that promotes the openness and reuse of public data to enhance transparency, citizen participation, innovation, and accountability. By adopting the Charter, Spain aligns itself with its six key principles: the proactive publication of open data, the provision of complete and timely information, the guarantee of accessibility and usability, the promotion of comparability and interoperability, and the use of data to strengthen governance, citizen engagement, inclusive development, and innovation.
The Charter also offers resources, guides, and practical tools to help governments apply these principles effectively and adapt them to their specific contexts. With this step, Spain seeks to consolidate its public policies on transparency and to use open data as a driver of concrete reforms, improved public services, and sustainable digital progress.
