The American Writing Machine Company is an American manufacturer of typewriters, including the Caligraph 1 (1880) and the Caligraph 2 (1882).
In 1893, facing increasingly active competition, typewriter manufacturer Remington Standard saw its leadership position eroded. The company decides to join forces with several other manufacturers. The American Writing Machine Company, Smith Premier Typewriter Company, Yost Writing Machine Company, and Densmore and Brooks merge as the Union Writing Machine Company, which in 1908 became the Union Typewriter Company.
