Today qualifying races of canoeing and kayaking have started in Catalonia. The event takes place on the eve of the Youth Olympic Games, which will take place this year in Buenos Aires from 6 to 18 October.
The competitions take place on the Catalan Olympic Canal in Castelldefels (20 km from Barcelona).
The opening ceremony of the preparatory competitions took place on April 11, where approximately 300 athletes aged between 15 and 16 (62 delegations) participated.
José Perurena, President of the International Canoe Federation (ICF) and Gerard Figueras, Secretary General of Sport of the Generalitat, took part in the ceremony.
The Youth Olympic Games are organized by the International Olympic Committee every two years in winter and summer.
The first event took place in summer in Singapore in 2010.
