The Ministry of justice of Andorra for the last 5 years started 28 proceedings for the deprivation or refusal of the nationality of the country

dual_nationality_andorraThe Ministry of justice of Andorra (Pyrenees) for the last 5 years started 28 proceedings for the deprivation or refusal of the nationality of the country. According to the Ministry of Justice, Xavier Espot Zamora, in 12 cases there were final decisions on deprivation of nationality. At the same time in 3 cases it was decided to suspend the citizenship of Andorra until the defendant presents effective evidence that he renounced other citizenship.

9 cases are still being processed by the Ministry of Justice.

All 28 cases of denial or deprivation of citizenship are associated with the article 23 of the Constitution of Andorra, according to which the Government can deprive a citizen of his status in the case of evidence of his possession of the citizenship of another country.  The basis for deprivation of nationality may also be information about the facts of military service in the army of another country, as well as participation in elective or political life of another country. According to the same article of the Constitution an Andorran citizen may voluntarily renounce citizenship of the Principality.

Andorra belongs to countries that prohibit dual citizenship, such as Monaco, Singapore, Japan or Saudi Arabia. For example, Spain allows dual citizenship with those countries with which it has historical ties (e.g. Latin America, Portugal or Andorra). In fact, Spain allows its citizens to have dual citizenship of Andorra, Andorra prohibits its citizens to have it.
