Smolenskaya embankment in Moscow

Smolenskaya embankment is located on the left bank of the Moskva River in the New Arbat area between Smolenskaya street and Svobodnaya Rossii square (Moscow, Russia). The British embassy is located here.

The project for the Smolenskaya embankment was developed in 1955 by architects Boris Barkhin, Vladimir Lerman and Nikolai Gaygarov.

In 2017, Smolenskaya Embankment was landscaped under the My Street program. The pedestrian part has been expanded here, observation platforms have been organized, benches and urns have been installed. Smolenskaya embankment is combined into a common recreation area with Rostovskaya and Savvinskaya embankments.

Buildings

No. 2, building 2 – polyclinic of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia;

No. 2-a – a residential building for employees of the USSR Ministry of Geology. Built in 1956;

No. 5/13 – a residential building for the generals (1955, architects Boris Barkhin, Nikolai Gaigarov). Ballerina Ekaterina Maksimova, historian Nikolai Yakovlev, marshals Nikolai Yakovlev Fyodor Falaleev, Alexander Novikov, Evgeny Savitsky, generals Georgy Khetagurov, Ivan Fedyuninsky, Sergei Ushakov. The building houses the Art Gallery on Smolenskaya Embankment. Object of cultural heritage of regional importance;

No. 10 – British Embassy building (2000, architects Ahrends, Burton and Koralek).

No. 12/31 – residential building of the People’s Commissariat of Defense of the USSR (1939-1940, architects A.V. Shchusev, A.K. Rostkovsky). An object of cultural heritage of regional significance.

On April 27, 2007, a monument to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson by Andrey Orlov was erected on Smolenskaya Embankment in Moscow. The faces of the actors Vasily Livanov and Vitaly Solomin, who at one time played the roles of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, are guessed in the sculptures.

Smolenskaya metro station – through the 1st Nikoloshchepovsky lane. Kyevskaya metro station – across the Borodinsky bridge from the beginning of the embankment.
