Series 7000/9000 Madrid
The 7000 and 9000 series are a series of mobile units of the Madrid Metro (Spain) built by AnsaldoBreda (Hitachi Rail) that provide service to lines 7, 9, 10 and 12. Mostly line 10 is served by series 7000 units; line 7 with 9000 series units. Its introduction also began on line 6 with dual-voltage units, however this introduction was paralyzed after the accident of a train at the Moncloa station, without serious personal injury. Finally, units 7000 and 9000 that circulated on line 6 were withdrawn from circulation and the older 5000 series cars that were retired were reintroduced. At the end of 2010, new dual-voltage 8000 series railway units were incorporated into line 6.

The 7000 series were built to provide service on line 10 after its extension to Puerta del Sur and conversion from 600 to 1500 V (DC). Some 7400 units (dual voltage) were also introduced on line 6 until their later withdrawal.
As of September 25, 2006, the new 9000 series units in compositions of six MRSSRM single-voltage cars at 1500 V began to circulate on line 7, and months later the 9400 double-voltage units at 600/1500 V began to circulate on line 6. In the spring of 2007, the 9700 series (compositions of three single-voltage MRM cars) began to circulate at 1500 V on the new MetroNorte and MetroEste sections of lines 7 and 10. There are a total of 52 boa-type trains, which have represented the Community of Madrid an investment of 450 million euros. As of May 19, 2014, they begin to circulate on line 9 to cover the gap left by the 6000 series sold to the Buenos Aires Subway. As of February 2021, the 9700 series also began to circulate on line 12.
Characteristics
At the time of introducing the 7000 series, the CAF 8000 series with similar characteristics was also introduced. However, Metro de Madrid finally decided to continue with the acquisition of series 7000 trains and abandon the acquisition of series 8000 trains except to later acquire S units for line 8, in such a way that the initial MRM compositions became at MRSM.
Although the acquisition of the 8000 series was abandoned, they returned to circulation on line 6 in MRM-MRM composition.
Units
Both series are designed by Pininfarina.
- 3 railcars. In M-R-M formation, consisting of cars 9700. Currently used on lines 7B (MetroEste), and 12 (MetroSur).
- 6 railcars. In M-R-S-S-R-M formation, used by all 7000 and the rest of the 9000. The 7000 single voltage are used on line 10, the 7400 and 9400 double voltage are used on line 9 and the 9000 single voltage on line 7.
Inside
All cars are lined with plastics on the inside and have aluminum ventilation hatches on top.
They have 178 seats and can accommodate 1,096 people standing. They also have places reserved for wheelchairs that have a seat belt.
Each car has 8 double doors with a width of 1.3 m. The height of the floor with respect to the road is 1,125 m.
Traction system
Most units operate at 1,500 V direct current, although there are dual-voltage units (subseries 7400 and 9400), which can operate at both 1,500 V and 600 V, which are those introduced in line 6, although currently they are You can see them providing service on line 9, due to the withdrawal of the 7000 series on line 6. They have 16 three-phase asynchronous motors per unit with a maximum power of 198 kW and 1800 rpm.
9000 upgrades
The only differences between the 9000 series and the 7000 are some small aesthetic changes such as the elimination of the imitation wood on the roof and the change of the red upper strip on the doors to a blue color. Also improvements in access to the train for the disabled, illuminated door closing signals for people with hearing problems and a significant improvement in the emergency system. So it seems that this series has solved the technical problems that the 7000 series has caused, although it maintains some errors that the 7000 series originally had and that have not been solved, such as false starts of the train when traveling in “ATO” mode (semi-automatic driving), sometimes needing a second or even a third attempt to start driving.
