Serie 9000 TMB: rolling stock from Barcelona metro

Sèrie 9000 TMB

The 9000 series trains are with standard gauge and were built by Alstom. This series was originally designed to serve the L9 and L10 lines. Currently they also run on the L2 and L4 lines in Barcelona (Spain).

The composition is MA1-MB1-R-MB2-MA2, where MA is control car, MB motor intermediate trailer and R intermediate trailer car.

The trains are part of the Alstom Metropolis family of metros, from the manufacturing company Alstom. The trains of this series have the same improvements as the trains of the 5000 and 6000 series. The exterior appearance is more aerodynamic, although the interior aesthetics are similar to those of the 5000 series trains. The main difference with the rest of the Barcelona metro series is that they are operated with ATO GoA 4 (automatic driving without a driver). However, due to the delays in the construction of line 9, it ended up choosing to build detachable cabins to be able to provisionally allocate the material to lines without automatic driving. The front of the train is different depending on whether the train has a cabin. Those on lines 9 and 10 have a large evacuation door at the front, along with a drop-down ramp that is adapted to people with reduced mobility.

The Metropolitan Transport Authority awarded Alstom the construction of the trains in December 2002. Due to delays in the progress of the construction of line 9, it was necessary to award the trains to the existing metro lines. The first convoys began to circulate on L2 in 2006. By 2007, all 24 convoys had joined L2. This meant that the 2100 series trains were sent to the L4, along with more new 9000 series trains. Finally the allocation of the 9000 series trains to the L2 and L4 lines was permanent. With the opening of sections of lines L9 and L10 from 2009, new batches of trains were built. This new batch of trains does not contain a cabin or driver (automatic) and a front evacuation door.

The same Alstom Metropolis train model was exported to the metros of Santo Domingo, Lima and line 3 of the Guadalajara metro in Mexico.

*Not to confuse with 9000 series from Madrid.
